Of Courage And Smiles

We who live our comfortable lives often forget that there are others who are less fortunate. We come to the painful realisation only when we make the effort to meet them.

One such occasion was when 350 underprivileged children from neighbouring NGOs visited our institute for the event organised by Pehla Kadam during Carpe Diem 2012. They won the hearts of one and all with the spectacular performances they put up. The highlight of the event was the 30 minute dance drama performed by deaf and mentally challenged children. They performed with impeccable coordination and in complete sync with the music. The three hours when the children took over the stage was indeed a tribute to courage, hard work and confidence. Their zest for life put clearly into perspective how petty and insignificant are our problems when compared to theirs.

We could also learn a thing or two about discipline from them. It was a delight to watch them arrive at our institute – On time, in a single file. They were the most gracious of audiences, maintaining silence during the performance and applauding at all the right places.

Children Having Snacks

Though it was the simplest of things that we could do, it was a day of great fun and joy for them. All we did was give them a stage to perform and a simple full meal. Yet they enjoyed the event thoroughly and looking at their smiles as they left with the modest gifts we prepared for them was worth the effort.

Little Butterflies

I cannot help but mention the five year old boy who is paralysed below the waist. He insisted on coming for the event in spite of the difficulty in travelling all the way to the institute. Seeing his happy face made my day.

In future as we become the leaders of industry we should remember to help those who are less fortunate. Even a small gesture from our part makes a huge difference for them. Kudos to all the organisers and everyone who contributed to the funds to make this event possible.
